New Year, New (Spiritual) Me

It's the time of year where we sit down and consider what we went through, what we'd like to change, and how we want to go about doing that. Maybe you want to focus on health so you look into the gym. Maybe this is the year you're going to learn a new hobby. Or, maybe this is the year you boldly proclaim "I'm going to read the Bible in a year!" or "I'm going to pray everyday!" Kudos to you friend! I'm rooting for you! But, may I offer some gentle advice and encouragement?
Before you begin this paramount task, be gentle with yourself. You may miss a day, or a week, or a month. Don't beat yourself up. Don't try to play catch up. Enjoy the reading for the day. God is gracious, and you are allowed to be gracious with yourself too!
Consider your season. If you have small children, you don't have much time during... well... any part of the day really. You never know what is going to happen. Perhaps before bed is easier for you and first thing in the morning. If you're working, first thing in the morning may be the perfect time for you. Whenever you decide to start your new spiritual practice, remember that this is a special time for you as much as it is for God.
To that end, being strict with yourself can be what defeats your plans faster than anything else. When it becomes a "have to" we naturally pull away from the task. Remember, this is a "want to", or even better a "get to." Terminology matters.
Lastly, if the most you can do is sit quietly, then you are like the widow who gave her last two coins. Life can be tough and it is full of ups and downs. Sometimes it's wonderful and everything falls into place. Other times everything just falls. This may be another season to be gracious with yourself. You're doing the best you can. God knows your heart and He knows your situation.
God bless, and Happy New Year!
